Marine Corps Leadership Basics for Business – Elite Basic Training, Part 1

Now that I have discussed how the Marine Corps attracts the best, I will move on to how they deliver elite basic training.  Let’s start off with two of the six effective basic training techniques the Corps uses and how these practices will benefit your business.

1. The Corps trains their recruits using their best Marines. The Marine Corps takes training very seriously.  Their coveted drill Instructor school is ONLY offered to top Marines.  The Marine Corps DIs are the best the Corps has to offer.  Your trainers & mentors should be elite as well.  They should be your top sales, marketing, management, operations, and finance people.  Following this standard can increase your company’s productivity while reducing recruitment costs.

2. Tell Corps consistently tells their Marines they are elite, over & over again – just ask one. Not all Marines are 6’ 4”, most are of average height.  What make Marines different is they feel like 6” 4”.  While in boot camp recruits are told repeatedly that they are elite.  There is something to be said about positive reinforcement.  The Marine Corps convinces its own of their uniqueness; it persuades the public as well.  Like the Corps, companies must inspire their people with enthusiasm and share their merits with their customers.

In my next two blogs I will continue my discussion on the Corps’ elite basic training methods.  If you would like to speak with us about creating a topnotch leadership-driven company culture or have a business question or issues you would like to discuss, please feel free to reach out to us via our website Contact page.
